Getting Started in Automotive Repair: Where to Begin

If you’re curious about working in automotive but aren’t sure where to start, you’re not alone. There are multiple ways to break into the industry, and not all of them require experience right away. Here are a few real-world entry points and resources to help you take that first step.

Training Programs & Education Pathways

Some colleges offer manufacturer-sponsored programs that combine classroom learning with real dealership experience.

Mount Hood Community College (MHCC) offers programs such as:

  • Ford ASSET

  • Chrysler MCAP

  • IMPORT programs

  • Subaru University

These programs typically:

  • Combine school with hands-on dealership experience

  • Provide training on modern vehicle systems

  • Create direct pathways into technician roles

Some local dealerships partner with these programs. For example:

  • Gresham Subaru works with MHCC’s Subaru program

    • Entry point: lube technician

    • Gain hands-on experience while receiving additional training

    • Dealership-supported growth into more advanced roles

    • Not always hiring, but worth checking periodically

Other Education Options

In addition to community college programs, you can also explore:

  • Universal Technical Institute (UTI)

  • WyoTech

  • Other local community college automotive programs

Each option offers different structures, costs, and learning styles—so it’s worth comparing what fits your goals best.

Entry-Level Jobs That Lead to Growth

You don’t always need formal schooling to get started. Many people enter the industry through:

Lube Technician / General Service Roles

  • Often require little to no experience

  • Provide hands-on training in basic maintenance

  • Can lead to more advanced technician roles over time

Companies like Firestone:

  • Hire entry-level technicians

  • Provide on-the-job training and internal development programs

  • Offer a pathway to grow into higher-level positions

👉 Tip: Look for shops that offer a wide range of services and training opportunities.
Some places may limit you to basic tasks without developing broader skills, which can slow long-term growth.

Starting in Auto Parts (Underrated Pathway)

Another strong entry point is working in an auto parts store.

Benefits include:

  • Learning part names and component identification

  • Building a foundation that translates directly into repair work

  • Developing strong part identification skills across different makes and models

O’Reilly Auto Parts was my own starting point during a difficult job market, and it became a huge advantage. It helped me quickly recognize components and better understand vehicle systems when I later transitioned into shop environments.
